Keeping Your Crochet and Knitwear Safe from Moths: A Crafters’ Guide

Protect knitwear from moths

Ladies, it’s that time of year again – moth season is upon us! As crafters, we know the devastating effects these pesky insects can have on our precious crochet and knit items. But fear not, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve to keep your creations safe and sound.

Here’s my 4min youtube video about this, if you prefer watching to reading: click HERE

Natural Remedies are Key

I swear by natural materials when it comes to moth protection. Dried lavender is my go-to, and I source mine from Amazon in generous 500g packets for the best value. I use small cotton bags filled with dried lavender, placing them alongside my knitwear in larger cotton bags. If your bag is bursting with items, don’t hesitate to add an extra lavender sachet. Lavender is a powerhouse when it comes to keeping moths at bay!

A Thoughtful Touch for Gifts

For those crochet items that are destined to be gifted, I’ve recently started slipping in a small lavender bag alongside the gift. Not only does it add a lovely, fragrant touch, but it also serves a practical purpose in protecting the crochet piece from moth damage.

Extend the Protection to Your Yarn Stash

My vigilance doesn’t stop at finished items; I also safeguard my yarn stash using the same method. Storing yarn in cotton bags with lavender sachets, which are then placed in boxes, has proven to be a foolproof strategy. Thanks to this routine, my yarn collection remains moth-free and ready for my next project.
